Central America

Central America packs colonial towns, volcanic lakes, surf beaches and rainforest into a compact region, and its hostel scene clusters around well-known stops such as Antigua, Lake Atitlán and the Costa Rican coast.

The isthmus between Mexico and Colombia is small on the map but changes quickly on the ground: cobbled colonial streets in Guatemala, black-sand surf breaks in El Salvador, cloud forest and volcanoes in Costa Rica, and Caribbean islands in Panama. Many backpackers travel it north to south or the reverse, using tourist shuttles, public buses and the odd regional flight.

Hostels are often the social centre of a stop. Spanish schools, surf lessons, volcano hikes and yoga classes are frequently booked through hostel desks, and many travellers choose a base for a week or more rather than moving every night. Atmospheres vary widely, so matching the hostel to the kind of stay you want matters.

Why stay in hostels in Central America?

  • Hostel desks commonly arrange tourist shuttles, which are a popular way to move between traveller towns.
  • Many surf and lake towns have hostels with lessons, rentals or activities on site.
  • Longer stays for Spanish classes or surfing suit hostels with kitchens and relaxed common areas.
  • Dorms make it easier to meet travel partners for border crossings and onward legs.
