Best areas to stay in Utila for hostels

Main Street and East Harbour

Best for: Dive shops, food and the ferry dock

Utila’s main settlement, sometimes called East Harbour, is where most dive shops, restaurants, bars and shops are found, along the waterfront and Main Street. The ferry dock is close by, so it is the easiest area for arrival and departure. Expect more activity and evening noise here than in other parts of the island.

Waterfront stretch beside the dive schools

Best for: Early starts for dive courses

Many dive schools and hostels sit along the waterfront on the edge of the main settlement, with jetties used to board dive boats. Staying close to the school you booked saves time on early mornings. The setting is more about boats and the sea than nightlife, and some stays are beside the water, so ask about mosquitoes and sandflies.

Sandy Bay and the west side

Best for: Quieter surroundings

Sandy Bay lies on the west side of the island and is quieter than the main settlement. It has a more local, residential feel and some accommodation, with fewer places to eat nearby. It suits travellers who want to be away from the busiest streets, as long as they are happy to walk or cycle into the main settlement.

Staying in Utila

Utila is part of the Bay Islands, off the Caribbean coast of Honduras. Honduras’s tourism board describes it as a magnet for divers and notes that it is a place to meet the whale shark, with the Mesoamerican Reef offshore. It also points out that the island is a place to earn PADI diving certification, and many dive operators on Utila run courses for beginners alongside fun dives for qualified divers.

Away from the water, Utila has a natural side. The tourism board mentions a reserve with mangroves, wetlands and tropical savannas, a marine research station and the swamper, an iguana found only on the island. The main settlement is compact, with dive shops, restaurants and hostels along the waterfront. It is easy to get around on foot or by bicycle, and most visitors stay for several days or longer.

Official UK travel advice for Honduras says petty theft is a problem on the Bay Islands and that emergency medical facilities are extremely limited. It also says recompression facilities are available on Utila. Read the FCDO advice before you travel, ask about the nearest recompression facility when booking any dive course, and check your insurance covers diving.

Getting to Utila

Most backpackers reach Utila by ferry from La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland, a crossing that typically takes around an hour. La Ceiba has its own airport (LCE), and San Pedro Sula (SAP) is the nearest large international airport, with a road transfer to La Ceiba typically taking around three hours. Flights to Utila’s small airport have been limited, so check current options. Roatán (RTB) is the other main Bay Islands airport, and ferries also link the islands. Official UK travel advice for Honduras warns about poorly maintained public buses and advises travelling on main roads in daylight, so read it before planning mainland legs. Check operators for current ferry schedules.

Best time to visit

The Caribbean climate is warm all year, and Utila is a year-round diving destination. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so check forecasts for those months, and ask dive operators which months give the calmest seas, since sources differ. Whale sharks are seen around the island at certain times of year, but sightings depend on conditions, so ask dive operators about the likely season.

Hostel tips for Utila

  • Ask whether the hostel is linked to a dive school and whether course packages include accommodation, so you know exactly what you are booking.
  • Check that your chosen dive operator is certified, and ask how recompression facilities work.
  • Pack insect repellent, as sandflies and mosquitoes can be a nuisance near the water.
  • Bring cash for the island, as card use and ATMs can be limited, and ask the hostel which ATMs are best.
  • Keep valuables locked away, as official UK travel advice says petty theft is a problem on the Bay Islands.
