Best areas to stay in Salento for hostels

Town centre around the Parque Principal

Best for: Walking to everything, including transport to Cocora

The main square, the church and the Calle Real are the heart of Salento. Restaurants, cafés and shops are on the doorstep, and shared jeeps to the Cocora Valley typically leave from the square. It is the most convenient base for short stays but can be busy at weekends and on public holidays.

Calle Real and the viewpoint

Best for: Colourful streets and sunset views

The Calle Real is the pedestrian street of painted houses and craft shops that leads up to Cerro Alto de la Cruz, a viewpoint over the town and the valley. Hostels nearby are within a short walk of the square but involve an uphill return. It suits travellers who enjoy the old-town atmosphere.

Outskirts and coffee farms

Best for: Quiet surroundings and farm stays

Some stays sit outside the centre, in the surrounding countryside near coffee farms. Colombia's tourism site notes that some farms offer overnight stays. These are quieter and greener, but you will rely on a short walk, taxi or jeep to reach the town and the Cocora Valley, so ask about transport.

Staying in Salento

Salento is the oldest town in the Coffee Cultural Landscape, according to Colombia's tourism site, and its bahareque houses are painted in bright colours with flower-filled balconies. The main square has the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and the Calle Real leads up to a viewpoint, Cerro Alto de la Cruz, with views over the town, the Cocora Valley and the Los Nevados area.

The Cocora Valley is the main draw. Trails pass through wax palms, the national tree of Colombia, which in Cocora can reach about 60 metres. The Quindío sector of Los Nevados National Park is reached from Salento through Cocora, and Parques Nacionales Naturales states that entry to that sector is regulated, so check the rules before you go. Coffee farms in the area offer tours and some have overnight stays.

The town is small and easy to cover on foot, with a pleasantly cool climate: Colombia's tourism site gives an average temperature of about 18°C. Many backpackers spend two or three nights here, and some stay longer to hike, visit coffee farms and slow down after the coast or big cities.

Rain can fall at any time of year in the mountains, and the Cocora trails can be muddy. Parques Nacionales Naturales states that entry to the Los Nevados sector from Cocora runs from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m., so plan early starts.
