Hostels and backpacking in Malaysia
Malaysia is split between the peninsula and Borneo, and most backpackers stay on the peninsula, linking Kuala Lumpur, the tea-growing hills of the Cameron Highlands, the food-focused city of George Town on Penang, the old port of Malacca and the island of Langkawi. Its mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous cultures shows most clearly in the food, festivals and temples, and English is widely understood.
Hostels are most plentiful in Kuala Lumpur and George Town, where converted shophouses and modern towers both house dorms and capsule-style beds. Many run walking tours, food trails and day trips, and quieter guesthouses sit alongside party-leaning places. In the highlands and on the islands there are fewer options, so planning ahead helps.
