Best areas to stay in Ninh Bình for hostels

Tam Cốc

Best for: Backpackers, bikes and boat rides

The main backpacker base, with hostels, homestays, cafés and bicycle hire along a few lanes by the rice fields. It is close to the Tam Cốc boat dock and Hang Múa. Many places have gardens or pools. Evenings are generally quiet.

Ninh Bình city

Best for: Trains and transport

The provincial city, with the railway station, bus links and local restaurants. It is about 8 to 10 km from Tam Cốc, so it suits travellers on very early or late trains, but it has fewer backpacker amenities than the Tam Cốc area.

Staying in Ninh Bình

Ninh Bình is often called "Ha Long Bay on land" for its limestone peaks rising from rice paddies and rivers. Tam Cốc is one of two boat docks where sampan rides pass karsts and caves; the other is Tràng An. Vietnam Tourism notes that boatmen often row with their feet, and the rice fields around Tam Cốc turn golden in late May.

Nearby, Hang Múa is a viewpoint reached by around 500 steps, with views over the winding river and paddies. Bái Đính is the country's largest complex of Buddhist temples, and Hoa Lư was the capital in the 10th and 11th centuries. Most sights are close together, so bicycles and scooters are a popular way to get around.

The Tam Cốc area has the main cluster of backpacker hostels, many with garden dorms, bicycle hire and pools. The province is about two hours from Hanoi by train or road, and many travellers stay one or two nights. Mornings are often best for boat rides and viewpoints, before crowds and heat build.

  • Relaxed

Sampan rides at Tam Cốc and Tràng An glide past limestone karsts and rice fields, and are rowed by boatmen who often use their feet.

  • Adventure

Hang Múa is a mountain viewpoint reached by around 500 steps cut into the slope, with a lookout over the river and paddies.

Getting to Ninh Bình

Ninh Bình has no commercial airport; the nearest major airport is Hanoi Nội Bài (HAN). From Hanoi, trains to Ninh Bình station typically take around two to three hours, and buses and private transfers take a similar time depending on traffic. Vietnam Tourism describes it as about two hours from Hanoi by train or road. From the station or bus stop, Tam Cốc is a short taxi, ride-hail or hostel transfer away.

Best time to visit

Vietnam Tourism recommends April to June, with golden rice fields around late May, and describes autumn as cool and clear. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool and drizzly, so views can be hazy. Boat rides run in most conditions, but clear mornings give the best views from Hang Múa.

Hostel tips for Ninh Bình

  • Stay in Tam Cốc if you want hostels, bicycle hire and sampan docks nearby.
  • Book Hang Múa and boat rides for the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.
  • Ask whether the hostel offers free or paid bicycles, scooters or transfers to the station.
  • Check how far the hostel is from the road, as lanes can be dark and unlit at night.
  • Bring a rain jacket in winter, as drizzly weather is common.
  • Ask about luggage storage if you plan to take a late train after checking out.

Many travellers visit as a day trip, but staying one or two nights lets you see the sights at a slower pace.

What is the difference between Tam Cốc and Tràng An?

They are two separate boat docks in Ninh Bình, both offering sampan rides past limestone karsts and into caves. Tam Cốc is closer to the backpacker hostel area and the rice fields. Tràng An is a landscape of rivers and caves a short ride away. Many visitors choose one for time reasons, while others do both over two days.
