Best areas to stay in Koh Phangan for hostels

Haad Rin

Best for: Full Moon Party and nightlife

Haad Rin on the south-east tip is the home of the Full Moon Party, with bars, beach clubs and a dense cluster of hostels within walking distance of the sand. It is busy and loud around full-moon dates, when accommodation fills. Outside party periods it is calmer, and boats connect it with other beaches.

Thong Sala

Best for: Ferry arrivals and practical services

The island's main port and town, with markets, shops, cash machines and transport links. Its beach is not the island's best, but it is convenient on arrival or departure days, especially for early ferries. Songthaews and taxis connect Thong Sala with the main beaches.

Srithanu

Best for: Yoga, wellbeing and a relaxed crowd

On the west coast, Srithanu is known for yoga studios, healthy cafés and a laid-back, international crowd. Hostels here tend to suit longer stays, remote work and early nights. It is a ride from Thong Sala and from Haad Rin, so transport planning is worth doing.

Haad Yao and the north and west coast

Best for: Quieter beaches and snorkelling spots

Haad Yao and the beaches towards Chaloklum are quieter, with small resorts, beach cafés and a few hostels. They suit travellers who want swimming and slow days rather than parties. Roads can be steep, and a scooter or reliable taxi helps with getting around.

Staying in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan lies in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, in Surat Thani province. It is best known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, a beach gathering held around each full moon that draws large crowds of travellers. Check the dates and any local rules close to your trip, because the schedule and venue can change.

Away from Haad Rin the island is much calmer. Thong Sala is the main town and ferry port, with shops, markets and practical services. Srithanu on the west coast is associated with yoga, wellbeing and a more relaxed crowd, while beaches such as Haad Yao on the west and Chaloklum in the north offer quieter stays. Roads are steep and winding in places.

Hostels therefore vary widely in feel. Some are built around party nights and group activities near Haad Rin, while others are small and focused on yoga, remote work or sleep. Choosing an area before you choose a bed matters more here than on most islands, as distances between beaches can be long and transport is limited.
