Best areas to stay in Siargao for hostels
01
General Luna town centre
Best for: Walkable cafes, bars and surf shops
The main service hub of the island, with restaurants, tour desks, surf rental and nightlife within easy walking distance of each other. Island hopping boats and many surf lessons are arranged from here. It can be busy and noisy in the evenings, so check how close a dorm is to the main road or any bar.
02
Tourism Road and Cloud 9
Best for: Surfers who want to be near the break
The road running from General Luna towards the Cloud 9 boardwalk is lined with surf-oriented accommodation, cafes and board rental. It suits travellers whose days revolve around the reef break. Most people reach the town centre on foot, by tricycle or by scooter, and you can walk to the boardwalk from many places along this stretch.
03
Quieter coast around General Luna
Best for: Calmer stays with a short ride into town
A few hostels sit a short scooter or tricycle ride from the centre along the coast, with more space and less late-night noise. Expect to rely on motorbike taxis, tricycles or a rented scooter for evenings out. Ask the hostel about transport after dark, since street lighting on side roads varies.

Staying in Siargao
Siargao sits in the Philippine Sea off the north-east tip of Mindanao and is best known for its surf, especially the Cloud 9 reef break near General Luna. The island is ringed by palm groves, with tidal pools, lagoons and small islands within a day trip of the main town. Surf schools and board rental shops are a normal part of the General Luna streetscape.
General Luna is the hub for travellers, with cafes, bars and surf shops along its main roads and the Tourism Road running towards Cloud 9. Beyond the town, motorbike and scooter rental is the usual way to reach places such as Magpupungko tide pools in Pilar or the northern beaches. Island hopping boats leave from General Luna for the nearby islets of Naked, Daku and Guyam.
Outside General Luna, coconut groves, tidal pools and quieter beaches give the island a slower pace.
Getting to Siargao
Most travellers fly into Sayak Airport (IAO) at Del Carmen, with direct domestic flights typically from Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB). From the airport, vans and tricycles take passengers to General Luna, usually in around an hour or less depending on traffic and roads. The alternative is a ferry from Surigao City on Mindanao to Dapa port on Siargao, which typically takes a few hours; schedules depend on weather, so check with the operator. From Dapa, vans and tricycles continue to General Luna.
Best time to visit
Siargao does not have a sharply defined dry season, and rain can fall in any month. The surf is typically strongest from around August to November, which is the main surf season, while December to February can be wetter and rougher on the sea. March to June is often calmer for island hopping, though sources differ on exact months. Typhoon activity occasionally disrupts flights and boats, so allow some buffer days.
Hostel tips for Siargao
Decide whether you want to be walking distance from General Luna town centre or near the Cloud 9 end of Tourism Road, because evenings out and surf sessions are in different places.
Ask whether the hostel arranges scooter rental, surf lessons and airport vans, since these save time on arrival.
Check how close the dorm is to a bar or busy road and ask about noise, as some parts of General Luna are loud late into the night.
Carry a rain jacket and dry bag for scooter rides, because showers can come in at any time of year.
Allow buffer time before onward flights or ferries, because weather can delay both.
If you plan to ride a scooter, check that you hold a licence valid for it and that your travel insurance covers it.
Siargao hostel FAQs
Where do backpackers stay in Siargao?
Most backpackers stay in or around General Luna, on the south-east coast, because it has the island's main concentration of surf schools, cafes, bars and tour desks. Some choose the Tourism Road stretch towards Cloud 9 to be near the break, while others pick quieter spots along the coast. The rest of the island has fewer hostels, so you will usually need a scooter or tricycle to explore it.
How do I get from the airport to General Luna?
Sayak Airport (IAO) is at Del Carmen, north of General Luna. Vans, shuttles and tricycles wait outside the terminal, and many hostels will arrange a pick-up if you message them ahead. The journey to General Luna is typically around an hour or less, depending on the vehicle and traffic. Agree the arrangement or check the fare system before you set off.
When is the surf season in Siargao?
The main surf season at Cloud 9 is generally described as running from around August to November, when swells are typically stronger. Surfing is possible outside those months, and beginner-friendly breaks are used by schools throughout the year. Conditions change with tide and wind, so surf schools and hostel staff are the best people to ask on the day.
Can I get to Siargao without flying?
Yes. Ferries run from Surigao City on Mindanao to Dapa port on Siargao, typically taking a few hours, though schedules vary with weather and operator. Surigao City itself is reached by flight or long-distance bus and ferry from other parts of Mindanao. Many travellers fly because it is quicker, but the ferry route is used by those already travelling overland. Check current schedules with the operator.
Is Siargao covered by the FCDO advisory for Mindanao?
The FCDO advises against travel to parts of Mindanao but lists Siargao as an exception to that advice. Advice changes, so read the current gov.uk Philippines travel advice before you book. It also covers topics such as typhoons, demonstrations and local laws, and you should check it again close to departure.
Do I need a scooter in Siargao?
Many travellers rent one, because the main sights are spread along the island and there is no regular public transport between them. If you prefer not to ride, tricycles, habal-habal motorbike taxis and tour vans operate from General Luna. If you do ride, check the hostel or rental shop about road conditions, helmet provision and whether your insurance covers motorbike use.
